Best Used Cars to Buy Vary by Driver

used cars, best used cars, used car, pre-owned vehicle, The Auto Connection, buy-here, pay-here, credit, financing, inventory, Norfolk, Danville, Wilson, Newport News,What are the best used cars to buy this summer? That truly depends on each customer.
At The Auto Connection, we ensure that all used cars and pre-owned vehicles in our inventory are inspected by our certified mechanics who conduct a 101-point inspection. Our inventory is constantly changing so we can offer high quality used cars and pre-owned vehicles to our customers.
When you shop for a used car, consider your personal needs. The best used cars for families are obviously going to be different than the best used cars for individuals. Make sure to look for features that apply to you. For instance, consider how many seats you need. If your family is growing, buy a car that will have enough room for car seats, strollers and visiting grandparents. If you’re single, maybe a car that gets excellent gas mileage will be your priority to save money and keep commuting costs low.
The Auto Connection carries many top foreign and domestic automakers including: Mazda, Toyota, Ford, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai to name just a few. These brands have all been recognized over the years for reliability and performance.
In 2014, the “Best Cars for the Money” according to the U.S. News & World Report included cars in 21 automative categories – from subcompact cars to full size pick up trucks. That year, Toyota – which includes its Scion and Lexus brands – took home the most awards of any automaker in five categories: sports cars, hybrid SUVs, Midsize Sedans, Luxury 2-Row Midsize SUVs and Compact Pickup Trucks.
Ford, on the other hand, received the most awards of any domestic automaker and any single brand. It won four awards in the following categories: Subcompact Cars, Hatchbacks, Hybrid Cars and 2-Row Midsize SUVs. It should be noted that in 2014, the Ford Edge and Ford Fusion Hybrid won Best Car for the Money awards for three consecutive years, according to the U.S. News & World Report.
While the following list was compiled for new car buyers in 2014, it provides some insight for used car buyers in 2016. As with all compiled rankings, the results should be taken with the understanding that the best used cars are often the ones that have been cared for by previous owners. This is why The Auto Connection inspects every vehicle before it joins our inventory.

Cool Summer Tips for Owners of Used Cars

Cool Summer Tips for Owners of Used Cars

used cars, Summer safety tips, The Auto ConnectionIt’s almost June and before you know it, everyone will be running the air conditioning nonstop in their used cars.

Making sure used cars always have working air conditioning goes without saying in Virginia and North Carolina. When the air conditioning doesn’t work, nobody likes riding in the car. Not even Mack Mack. At The Auto Connection, we’d like to offer our customers some other important safety tips to stay cool this summer:

  • Check your cooling system to see if it needs servicing. Rusty-looking coolant and floating particles indicate it’s time to get your system flushed and refilled.
  • Maintain your car so that power and manual windows always can roll down. Let some of that heat out before you turn on your air conditioning.
  • Never leave a child alone in a parked car. The same goes for pets. Even when the windows are rolled down or the air conditioning is running, it’s just not safe. Did you know that a child’s body temperature can heat up three to five times faster than an adult’s body? When it’s 80 degrees outside, it only takes 10 minutes for the temperature inside used cars to reach deadly levels for children and pets in 10 minutes. In fact, heatstroke inside a car can occur when the outside temperature is as low as 57 degrees.
  • Before you lock the door and walk away from your used car, take a peek in the front and back of your car. It might seem crazy to suggest that people would forget that their child or dog was in the back seat, but it happens, especially when their routine changes. One way to remember someone is in the back seat is to place your purse or briefcase in the back seat so you have to check. If your daily routine has been altered and someone else is driving your child, always check to make sure your child has arrived safely at their destination.
  • Always lock the doors to your used car. That way, a child can’t climb inside and become trapped. Keep your keys out of reach, too.

Get Your Used Car Ready for a Summer Road Trip

Get Your Used Car Ready for a Summer Road Trip

used car, used car maintenance, The Auto ConnectionIf you’re one of the millions of Americans making plans to travel by car this summer, make sure your reliable used car is ready to take on all the challenges and pleasures of a good road trip.

Drivers can expect to pay some of the lowest gas prices in 12 years, according to the American Automobile Association. In fact, AAA estimates that drivers in the United States have saved nearly $12 billion on gas already this year compared to the same timeframe in 2015.

It’s no wonder that lower gas prices are why 55 percent of Americans say they are more likely to take a road trip this year.

Before you hit the road, The Auto Connection offers these important safety and maintenance tips to help keep your family safe and your used car ready for summer travel.

  • Stay alert on the road. Map out your route in advance so you know where you’re going. Plan to make frequent stops so you can stay rested and alert while you drive your used car.
  • Make sure your used car has been serviced regularly. Tune-ups, oil changes, battery check and tire rotations help prevent breakdowns.
  • Check the air pressure of your tires. You should always check the air pressure of your tires once a month, when the tires are cold. That means they haven’t been driven on for at least three hours. Remember that a tire can lose air over time; it doesn’t need to be punctured. And the leading cause of tire failure is underinflation – not having enough air pressure. To figure out your correct tire pressure, look for the label on the driver’s doorframe or in your used car’s owner manual.
  • Inspect your tires for uneven or excessive wear. If the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch, you might need to replace your tires. You can always ask the certified auto mechanics at The Auto Connection to look at your used car’s tires if you have any concerns.
  • Inspect belts and hoses. Summer temperatures can take a toll on rubber belts and hoses. If you see signs of obvious wear, get them check out.
  • Keep wiper blades in good shape. If you can’t see where you’re going, you’re more likely to have problems on the road.
  • Check your lights. Make sure all the lights on your used car are working: headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers, interior lights and trailer lights. If you’re towing a trailer behind your used car, make sure to check its brake lights and turn signals. When they don’t work, it can pose a serious safety hazard.
  • Service your cooling system if needed. If your coolant appears rusty or you can particles floating around in it, it’s time get your cooling system flushed and refilled.
  • Assess your used car’s fluid levels. Make sure your oil, brake, transmission, power steering and windshield washer fluid reservoirs are full. If you have a fluid leak, take your used car in to be serviced.
  • Check your air conditioning. Aside from keeping people comfortable in hot weather, having a/c is important because people who are in poor health or those who are sensitive to heat – such as children, adults and dogs – can become seriously ill from overheating.

Does Your Pre-Owned Vehicle Need Synthetic Oil?

Does Your Pre-Owned Vehicle Need Synthetic Oil?

pre-owned vehicle, used car, used car maintenance, The Auto Connection, pre-owned carChoosing the right motor oil for your pre-owned vehicle is an important decision. That’s because putting the wrong type of oil in your car can do a lot of damage.

At The Auto Connection, our highly-trained auto technicians are happy to discuss with you the proper motor oil for your pre-owned vehicle. One question that often comes up when we’re working with our customers, is whether it’s best to switch to synthetic motor oil.

There are pros and cons to using synthetic motor oil for your pre-owned car. Before you make a decision, check your used car’s owner manual for guidance or speak to our service center. We have ASE certified technicians on staff who have the knowledge and expertise to discuss the best motor oil for your pre-owned car.

Does a pre-owned vehicle need synthetic motor oil?

Here are the pros to synthetic motor oils:

  • Synthetic oil, polyalphaolefin oil or PAO blends, cause lower engine wear, extending the life of your engine.
  • You don’t have to change your oil as often if you use synthetic oil. This also depends on whether you use a full PAO synthetic oil or a synthetic blend. Oil changes may be needed every 7,500 or not until every 25,000 miles depending on which oil you choose for your pre-owned car and the recommendations in your car’s owner manual.
  • It’s better for the environment. Synthetic motor oils help meet cleaner air emission standards.

Here are the cons to synthetic motor oils:

  • Synthetic oil is much more expensive than regular motor oil. If you plan on keeping your pre-owned vehicle for a long time, using synthetic oil would be less expensive in the long term but definitely more expensive in the short term.
  • Synthetic oil can cost around $6 per quart, while traditional motor oil costs $1 per quart.

Remember, not all synthetic oils are the same. There are full PAO synthetics, synthetic oil from petroleum oil basestock and synthetic blends. If this all sounds too confusing, talk to our auto technicians at The Auto Connection’s service centers. We are happy to explain the differences so you can keep your pre-owned car running great.
